There is the:
-Piping Squad
-Structural Squad
-Civil Squad
-Electrical Squad
-Mechanical Equipment Squad
-Vessel Squad
-Instrument Squad
-Process Squad

All of these groups produce or are responsible for documents related to a project.
Most of these documents produced within each of these groups, because they affect other groups need to be reviewed (or checked) by these other groups to insure there are no conflicts or unacceptable conditions. Some of the groups (Mechanical & Instruments) are responsible for equipment documents from Vendors, these also need to be checked by other groups.

Therefore before sign-off and issue for official use out of the engineering office to the Client, or the construction site the document is routed to other groups for "Squad Check".
The person who should do the actual "Squad Check" for a specific document is the person within the discipline who is most effected by and responsible for the area related to by the routed document.

Hello Jop,
Shouldn't the Squad Check set be checked by the originating discipline (or squad) PRIOR to perfoming the actual Squad Check that includes the other disciplines (or squads)?

I have a different take on the term “squad check …or checker”. One of the engineering positions hit by cut backs in the mid-late 80’s was the position of checker …a full time position/dept. where a Sr. level designer checks the dwg.s for a project that another designer generated. This was an in depth review/check of the project design to insure that every thing was complete, functional, & correct. Unfortunately when times got real bad (80's) the “geniuses” at the top saw no real productivity from people in this position and that arm of the design department was dropped or cut back drastically! Basically projects were going out with little or no checks being done on the dwg.s!
After a time (and a number of errors costing $$$ on projects) it was determined that a “check” was needed on projects before there was an attempt to construct. However reconstituting a whole checking dept. was not the goal. What did happen was the project dwg.s were duplicate a number of times and the project was passed out to key senior members in the piping design group (or “squad”) so that a number of people could give it a “cursory” review to look for obvious errors. This became known as a “squad check” …a cursory review done by a number of designers, normally done between projects (with deadlines) that the individual designer was responsible for at the time. I believe the term “squad check” was officially initialized by a major engineering firm (which will remain nameless) to legitimize this less than in depth attempt at checking project dwg.s. This term has stuck around and people that don’t know the history behind it think it’s some magically way or department to check drawings.

Bob,

My short answer is "Yes"

My long answer to your question will also show a different perspective than the one by "11echo". The "11echo" reply is no doubt valid for some firms although I have never seen or worked under that system.

The way it was done where I worked (Fluor) from 1954 to 1999 we had a "Procedure" that was used across all disciplines. We did not have a specific "Squad Check" group.

In outline form the "Inter discipline Squad Check Procedure" worked like this:
- All disciplines had a substantial list of all their standard deliverables. If not they were required to develop one.

- Early in the project right after "Project Scope" development, a "Project" copy of these lists were updated as required for any added Deliverables

- The Deliverables were posted on a Matrix (Deliverables vertical down the left side and the other disciplines horizontal across the top)

- Each Discipline had one or more pages depending on the number of deliverables

- The discipline matrix pages were turned in to the Engineering Manager (EM) who combined it into a single "Book" document

- The EM then routed this book to all discipline Leads for "Mark-up"

- Each Discipline Lead would go through all the other peoples matrix pages and in the column under his discipline designation, mark which documents his/her group need to Review/Squad check

- After all groups had completed the mark-up it was reviewed by the EM and then seperated apart and the pages were returned to the original discipline.

- The original discipline updated his/her disciplines matrix with all the marks ("X" in the matrix boxes) entered by the other disciplines

- A "Standardized" routing slip was created with the originators Name/Group and a list of all the other Discipline Groups and Leads Name

- Later the various documents are created and checked internally by the originating group.

- Prior to "Issue For Approval" (IFA) by the Client or "Issue For Construction" (IFC) the matrix is reviewed and a "Squad Check" copy is routed to the other disciplines as listed on the matrix.

- The Discipline Lead selected the person with-in his/her group who was most effected by that "document" and had that person review it and add marks or comments as appropriate. The Lead (normally) reviewed the marks and then forwarded the document on as required. Anyone who added marks or comments on the document was required to sign and date the marks. The Lead signed the routing slip in and out.

- Vendor drawings for Pumps, Exchangers, Control Valves, etc were handled in much the same way. They were all routed internally to interested groups before being "Approved" and returned to the vendor

I am totally with Jop about the Squad Check procedure & JACOBS follows the same procedure for Squad Check.
Although there might be different perspective as "11echo" have. The "11echo" reply is no doubt also valid for some firms although I have never seen or worked under that system.
As per my understanding & knowledge about several reputed engg firms the procedure mentioned by Jop is more or less SAME most of the times.

Cheers,
Abhijit
