Cross section thru pipe was created by Crashtested
I was taught coming up as a piping designer that drawings were to show a hatched end symbol for pipe, also I had become quite used to seeing vendor dwgs showing the same. Last week I was told that is incorrect and is only to be used for a solid shaft and our Company X standard is just the end symbol with no hatch.

Every bit of information I have and have looked up shows a hatched end symbol. Now I’m more than willing to let go of what I’ve seen and what I was taught for a company standard but could any of you shed any light on what is the accepted industry standard?

Maybe I'm completely wrong and that's fine it's happened before, twice, today!

It is a petty issue but it is a good idea to be consistent. Assuming your company has one of the popular 2D or 3D CAD systems I suggest you check what kind of symbol is used there and then use that everyplace.

We have both!

You have the choice to draw it with or without the hatching! The person who told me I was in the wrong is from another office and is here checking for our current project.

Up till this point I have only been working on/in the Mechanical Dept so I haven't had to search out other dept standards.
I just tracked down the CAD Standards for Piping and low & behold I was right!

I know it's petty to say the least but when the design lead is telling me this is how he wants it shown and then the checker is telling me I'm wrong and IT'S ONLY used for a cross section of a solid shaft and NOT our company standard I had to question it.

Normally when you enter this profession you start with drafting, and they teach you how to draft in the mechanical or machine discipline (WHY machine? …I'm guessing because it's been around the longest!!?) ...Anyway you have to start somewhere, and once you have that under your belt you can now start in other disciplines. Learning a new discipline is now easier because they basically follow the old machine discipline. There are alot of similarities, but now individual discipline practices and conventions come into play, and you have to learn and translate these one from another.
I agree with you, section cuts thru piping the ends are hatch ( in the "S" pattern for large & total cross-hatched thru small) ...However what’s been indicated to you is both right and wrong ... It is correct to only cross-hatch only solid bar section cuts, but ONLY in the machine discipline! Somebody took the time to learn the machine discipline, but not the piping and is making a wrong assumption as to how section cuts are indicated. NOW is the time for you to use the second most important skill a piping designer needs to have, that as a ...negotiator! ...Good Luck my friend!!!

I think the Lead needs to speak with the checker and set him/her straight.

If every one is following the Leads direction, then the checker will be marking up everyones drawings as wrong.

To me, no-brainer - go with the lead, and if the checker has an issue with it, tell him / her to take it up with the llead.

Your output is someone's input! It will be important to know how the information will be 'interpreted' by downstream consumer.

And yes, consistency matters even if it is on the WRONG side
