Request about HOT TORQUING on line with HIGH TEMPERATURE was created by marck1783
Dear All,
I want to submit to you a question that coming from FIELD.
During COMMISSIONING activities the Licensor and subsequently the client have requested a complete table with all the data for HOT TORQUING related only a REACTOR and HEATER area.
This area, in operation condition, working with high temperature, but normal pressure.
For this project, has been followed the standard tightening during construction/erection activities.
In my experience the torquing activities are made when the flange connection are cold and the standard data for tightening take in to account the eventually expansion/relaxation when the temperature of the material raise up and come back to cold status.
The step for this activities normally are :
1 - Torquing during erection
2 - make in operation the line
3 - re check all the flange connection when the line come back in cold status.
Also I want to highlight that in my experience and also in accordance with some standard from very important chemical company, HOT TORQUING shall be avoided.
What is your opinion about the above request? it is correct?
On internet and standard specification I have not found any type of data for HOT TORQUING.
Existing some standard data for HOT TORQUING ?
We have not made any HOT TORQUING, but maybe someone has some experience about it?
Thanks a lot for the cooperation
Best regards

Dear Jop,
Thanks for your prompt reply about my request.
But in my opinion in the post indicated by you, is referring which actions need to be done in order to have a good flange connection without any leakage during relative test.
I agree with the mentioned point indicated in the post highlight by you, but I have some doubt about the following reply :
QUOTE
"HOT BOLTING" by TBP (Mechanical)
This term is used for the completion of maintenance work on a bolted joint when the joint is under loading. This can involve the replacement of individual bolts. There are risks both to the joint itself and to health and safety associated with this technique."
UNQUOTE
What I understand is that using HOT TORQUING we increase the issue about health and safety associated with this technique.
But I'm not understanding if made hot torquing make sense during COMMISSIONING activities because as per good engineering practice the torquing activities has been made when the material is cold and not hot.
The request is to have a complete table with all data for TIGHTENING in hot condition, in your opinion make sense request this type of data?
I think that with TIGHTENING data for COLD condition, we satisfy the relaxation of the material when the temperature raise up, and when the temperature come back in cold condition the operator can re-check the bolt if every are OK.
What I want to try to understand if the request to have a HOT TORQUING data (for system with HIGH temperature but normal pressure ) make sense or we can reply polite NO, mechanical subcontractor need to use the same data of TIGHTENING used during erection of the line.
Thank you very much for your help and cooperation.
