PSV/PRV Discharge was created by newdam07
Hi Guys,
I am checking a piping isometric from our detailed designer. The line is a PSV discharge to atmosphere. there are 2 PSVs; one is spare. The discharge line has a block valve (one locked open and one is spare) and it was placed in the vertical. The line is going up the structure which means the valve is a low point and is a pocket. My question is, is this kind of configuration allowed or good practice? I am working on a modular unit and space is limited. I believe this is the reason why the designer kept it at the vertical.

As always, thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Adam

Some additional information would help us.
What size are the discharge lines?
Do the two discharge lines tie together?
How far up do they go from the PSV to the end?
What kind of plant is this?

Discharge line is 6". After the block valves the discharge line tie together and go up the structure to vent to atmosphere. From the junction to atmosphere is around 142'-0" vertically, not counting the horizontal leg of the line. I am working on a catalyst regeneration section.

Are these two relief valves venting Steam?
How close is the nearest outside wall?
What is outside that wall?

Air. operating temp is 100 deg F.
What do you mean by wall? It is an open structure and it is venting at the highest point of the structure. Can we send snapshots here? I think it is easier to visualize what I'm trying if I can send a snapshot.

If it is "Just" air at just 100 degrees F why not just run the lines (individually) horizontal, the shortest distance to the outside of the structure and let them blow?
You will save the cost of the valves, the flanges and a lot of pipe.
