I think it would be more helpful for dfitter to understand that there is a specific rules that goverens the letters and the placement of the letters in and around the "baloon."
Lets say we have a baloon with three letters and three numbers and a line.
The letters are on the top or above the line and the numbers are below the line.
For the letters, there are three positions and each position has meaning. Example, "T" in the first position means "Temperature" but "T" in the third position means "Transmitter."
The line if solid means that the readout instrument is located on the main control board, if dotted it means that the readout is on a local board.
There are sometimes letters outside the baloon to the baloon to the lower right or lower left. These to have meaning.
All of this is spelled out in the ISA (Instrument Society of America) standards.

Blimey Ashokaa,
That list included everything except the kitchen sink (actually it included that as well ha ha ha)
As entertaining as that list was, I'm not sure I've ever seen any of those abbreviations on a P&ID !!
Now with regards to the original post, there isn't a universal 'standard' for P&ID symbols.
Although PI will typically be a Pressure Indicator and TT will be a Temperature Transmitter , XI may be a pig signaller for one company or a corrosion coupon for another.
Rather than make an assumption it is always best to ask for the legend sheet that should be issued along with any P&ID's.
I've fallen foul of assuming that something on a P&ID is one thing, only to find out later on that it's something completely different that takes up 4 times as much room and should be located in an entirely different location !!

OK guys,

This has been here quite a while, but may have been hard to find, so here is a link to a load of abbreviations:

please be aware that THERE IS a standard for P&ID nominclature. There is a society that has the sole purpose of informing what the requirements of the P&ID are. The ISA (Instrument Society of America) published these requirements. A company will usually state that their P&ID's are per ISA standards. If a company chooses not to follow ISA standards, then they must be responsible to publish their own standards and nominclature.
