Hi Mikal,

I don't know about the origins of the term, but a Bull Plug would be defined as follows:

"A solid plug used as an isolation device in piping systems, conduits or wellbore tubulars"

I know that didn't answer your question, but it may answer someone elses!

Hello Anton,

Thanks for the reply... someone at work asked me this question yesterday and I had to say that I really didn't know the origin of the term. I believe the term "bull plug" originated in the oilfield, but I'm not certain. Thanks again for your prompt response!

I "think" I may have answer for you. The plug type Mr. Anton described I know as a "BAR Plug" ...basically a threaded cylinderal shape, but SOLID, we use these type plug alot here in the oilfields. I was told by an old welder once that a a BULL plug was called that because it looked like a BAR plug, but by it's design was hollow, so not at stronge as a BAR plug. Hence the name "BULL" because false looking BAR plug.
