A "Belleville washer" is NOT a Lock Washer! It is a Concave washer shaped Spring that is used to maintain compression of a bolted joint.

I have also used them (in a stack arrangement) for "Hold-Downs" on Reciprocal Compressor suction and discharge piping.

JOP I believe techincally you are correct that Belleville washers are "spring type washers", but in function they are a lock washer. I see a number of internet sites listing them as a "lock washers" ( www.zhenhuastamping.com/products ... 57256.html
) ...What ever you want to call them, they TRY to keep nuts from backing off threaded studs so a flanged connection will remain tight. So something to consider in a design, other then just standard studs with nuts. ...My $0.02 anyway.
