With No Expansion, Superior Refinery Doesn't Need New Oil Source
While the new Alberta Clipper pipeline technically ends in Superior, Wis., the Murphy Oil refinery there doesn't need and really can't use any of the new oil moving south from Canada. Dave Podratz, Superior refinery manager for Murphy Oil USA, said existing pipelines bring his refinery enough oil. "It won't affect us at all. We won't be using any of that capacity,'' Podratz said.

Murphy's proposed $6 billion refinery expansion has been shelved -- apparently permanently -- as several factors have combined to cut U.S. demand for gasoline, Podratz said. New oil moving on the Alberta Clipper will probably keep moving south, on another Enbridge pipeline -- called the Southern Access -- to refineries in Illinois and Indiana, such as a new BP refinery outside Chicago.

Had Murphy Oil decided to build its massive expansion in Superior, first unveiled in 2007, the Alberta Clipper probably would have supplied Murphy. Experts say U.S. demand for gasoline may have peaked in 2007 and may never get that high again. Gas demand is down because of the recession, higher gas prices, higher-mileage cars, older Baby Boom drivers driving fewer miles, conservation efforts and other reasons. Meanwhile, Podratz said the U.S. is importing more and more refined gasoline from refineries overseas, lowering demand for U.S. refineries even more.

WorleyParsons Canada Expands Services to NL
Larry M. Benke, P.Eng, Managing Director, WorleyParsons Canada and its' wholly owned subsidiary INTECSEA Canada announced the expansion of services into Newfoundland and Labrador. Mike brings 20+ years of experience in offshore pipeline/riser/facilities engineering including projects on the Canadian east coast, the Canadian Beaufort, the Canadian high Arctic, offshore Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico and Sakhalin Island.

Skanska To Build Refinery Unit for Petrobras
Skanska has been awarded a contract to construct the first phase of a new refinery for crude oil in Brazil. The total contract value is USD 623 M, of which Skanska's share is 40 percent, corresponding to about USD 250 M, or about SEK 1.8 billion, which will be included in order bookings for the first quarter. The customer is Petrobras, one of the world's leading energy companies and one of Skanska's repeat customers. The contract is for the first processing unit of a new oil refinery at Petrobras Petrochemical Complex in the Rio de Janeiro state.
The project relates to a crude and distillation unit for crude oil entering the refinery. The unit will have the capacity to process about 150,000 barrels a day. Skanska will head the consortium responsible for design, detailed engineering executions and construction of the facilities, including electromechanical installations. The contract also encompasses the procurement of material and equipment and Skanska will also provide assistance in connection with start up and operation.
Work is scheduled to commence immediately and will be completed within 36 months. About 3,000 workers will be involved when work on the project is at its peak. The facilities at Petrobras Petrochemical Complex, Comperj, will cover an area of 45 square kilometers and will be operational during 2013. Skanska Latin America is one of the continent's leading contractors. Operations focus primarily on construction, operations and services for the international oil & gas and energy industry. In 2009, the company with about 10,000 employees, had revenues of about SEK 6 billion.

KBR Wins Toledo Refinery Contract
KBR announced Wednesday that it has been awarded a contract with BP-Husky to provide engineering, procurement and other project related services for BP-Husky Refining LLC's $400 million Reformer 3 equipment upgrade of its Toledo Refinery located in Oregon, Ohio.
KBR will provide design and support services needed for the project, replacing two existing naphtha reformers and a hydrogen plant with a single, state-of-the art reformer. The new unit is expected to increase the refinery's gasoline yields, increase co-product hydrogen production and improve overall plant reliability. Additionally, the new equipment will assist the refinery in meeting future environmental regulations, with an anticipated air emissions reduction of more than five percent. The award of this work follows KBR's completion of front end engineering for the project for BP-Husky. Work will be executed out of KBR's Houston and Monterrey, Mexico offices.

Sasol Awards Foster Wheeler Contract for Wax Expansion Project
Foster Wheeler AG announced Tuesday that its Global Engineering and Construction Group has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) contract by Sasol for its Fischer-Tropsch Wax Expansion Project to be located at Sasolburg, South Africa. The Foster Wheeler contract value for this project was not disclosed and will be included in the company's first-quarter 2010 bookings.
This wax expansion project, which is expected to double Fischer-Tropsch hard wax production at Sasolburg, will be managed from Foster Wheeler's full-service execution center in Midrand, near Johannesburg, and will also involve its Singapore office. Foster Wheeler's scope of work includes detailed engineering and procurement on behalf of the client, as well as project and construction management. Foster Wheeler completed the front-end engineering design in the fourth quarter of 2009 and has subsequently been assisting Sasol in early EPCm activities. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2012.

Mustang to Review North Rankin B Platform Topsides
North West Shelf Venture's Australian operator, Woodside Energy, has selected Wood Group's Mustang to provide the independent assessment and verification of readiness for one of the world's heaviest open-water floatover installations, the North Rankin B (NRB) platform topsides, to be located on the North West Shelf of Australia.The NRB topsides installation is significant and will break world records including the heaviest topsides (23,600t) to be floatover-installed on a steel jacket; and, at a depth of 126 meters (413 feet), the deepest open-water floatover steel jacket.
The NRB topsides is an integrated floatover deck which will be installed on the platform's steel jacket substructure. The NRB topsides will be transported to its final location on a 20 meter high Deck Support Frame such that the topsides is floatover installed on the top of the NRB jacket at an elevation of 28 meters. The floatover method eliminates the use of lifting operations and uses the transport barge itself as an installation barge. This eliminates the need for a crane vessel, which results in cost, scheduling and risk benefits. The NRB platform will be similar in size to the existing North Rankin A (NRA) facility. Once installed, the NRB platform bridge-linked to the existing NRA platform will form the NR2 central processing complex
