Irish need not apply? was created by Mr.Pipe
Hey fellow pipers!

I just saw a job advertised this morning which I applied for 2 weeks ago, it's in the UK. I won't say what job it is just in case.
The job is fairly basic piping and I think I am more than experienced to do it along with the necessary qualifications. So why are they advertising the job again and not bother to reply to my application? I have had this happen on a few occasions and it's starting to annoy me! None of these companies would know who I am. So why not even give me a chance? The only thing I can think of is because i'm Irish, there is nothing else I can think of. I know on my CV I would have enough to even get me an interview. Is this all in my head or what?

Oh, btw, I'm in no way "Anti-English" and I am not trying to insult anyone English here, some of the nicest people I know are English. I honestly can not see any other reason! It's just I heard of this happening before in the 80's, not just in piping!

Hi Mr. Pipe (if that's your real name!!),

I would have to say that I don't think there is an anti-Irish agenda at play here.

I have had the same frustration in applying for jobs over the last year, and I would be being charitable if I said that 20% of agents actually replied (even with a polite, thanks but no thanks!).
I'm Irish too, but this has happened to most pipers I know who have applied for jobs in the past year, regardless of their nationality.

Some agents are much better than others at replying.

I have challenged some agents on the reasons for lack of basic manners when it comes to acknowledging applications.
The standard response is that due to the amount of cv's received they couldn't possibly reply to all applicants.

The cynic in me would say that there are a few unscrupulous characters out there who are just harvesting cv's for when they actually have real jobs to offer.

My 2 cents worth .....
This is not xenophobia at work, just a simple lack of manners!

What happens here in Canada is that a company will be bidding on a job and they collect resumes to show the client the people they can get. The trouble is more than one company is bidding on the job so they all advertise they have a job to collect resumes. It is a bit unfair because they are using you to prove their worth but in the end 9 times out of 10 the client pulls out leaving everyone high and dry. This especially upsets the hiring agencies because they do all the work to find suitable people but no one gets hired which means they do not get paid.

I know I am coming in late to this discussion. I hear what you say about people gathering resumes for bids, or worse just gathering them, and appreciate that it must be frustrating if you are looking for work. 2009 was an odd year for many reasons and we did some work on bids for clients during 2009. I agree with hmiddle, 9 out of 10 bidders will not be successful but if the client confirms it a bid they will normally agree to hire the resumes provided if their bid is successful. So, there may be merit in allowing your resume to go forward but you should be told it is for a bid.

I am originally from Dublin and have never seen any bias against Irish applicants.

Anton I note your comment re acknowleging an application (i've been guilty of this too) you have given me a New Year's resolution !

Yes i have same problem.
The clients use my CV to
get jobs. Then they give their
friends all of the work.

This is not fair.

One way around this is to go direct and not through agents. The agent may not have your best interests at heart and you are better off managing your own career.
Some companies require the contractor to go through an agent and in that case you select the agent you wish to work with. You can then negotiate your own deal with the agent of choice.
