Questions from a Piping Student. was created by NW Jon
Hi all! First off, I am 2 months into an AA degree in mechanical engineering with the goal of becoming a process piping drafter/designer. We do have a classes on process piping drafting, strength of materials, statics, and structural detailing. Other than those classes, the program is designed to teach students the fundamentals necessary to go into a number of different careers. Including piping, aerospace, and automotive drafting/design. My college does come highly recommended from local pipers ive talked to, but im looking for things that can supplement my classroom education and help me on my path. Like,

Literiture on piping design geared for junior designers. I know there are books on amazon, I just dont know their complexity.

I dont think my course covers 3D modeling for piping. As far as ive seen we only cover P&ID and some plan views. Very bare bones. The solution taught is AutoCAD Plant3D because that is the solution one of the local design companys uses. How important is it for junior drafters/designers to be able to model?

Skills that employers are looking for in candidates fresh out of college and things that would help junior drafters that college curriculum may not cover.

Any other input.

Thanks alot and im looking forward to any respnoses!

I welcome you to the world of Piping. I have been in Piping for more than fifty years and I still love it.
I will try to answer your questions.

Piping Books for beginners:
The first thing you need to know is the basics on Drafting. Here is an inexpensive book for basic drafting. You need to know and understand what all the "Line Styles" are and what they mean.

Next you need to know the hardware and the symbols used in piping. The hardware is the pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, instruments, attachments etc. This is one of the very best books for a beginner and it does not cost a months rent. Other people will also offer suggestions for Piping Books. Some may be appropriate for a beginner but others will be far too advanced and too expensive.

At this point do not worry about 3D modeling. That is for later. You need to know the basics before you get on a terminal. The 3D Tool world is constantly changing so by the time you get to that point in your development you will be learning a system that may not exist today.

"Skills that employers are looking for the college curriculum may not cover." True, but all you can do is learn what the college curriculum covers and be smart about who you choose for a Mentor.

I will be in touch,
Jop

NW Jon,

Great advise from JOP.

I would also go along with not needing to worry about 3D modelling for now.
Piping is the profession .... Software is one of many tools.

Get the basics right, and go from there.

A really big step will be getting into a company, that will really teach you the ins and outs of piping.
The company itself does not matter as much as the pipers in there that will guide you.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the input. I am taking a couple drafting classes and have good textbook on that. Looking into other books never hurts, though. I understand that technical sketching is an important part of piping, even if computers are used to generate drawings. Ill just work hard and make sure that I fully understand a subject before building on it.

It is great move that you have started early & I wish you good luck for it.

I would like to suggest one book on piping which will be of great help if referred...

books.google.co.in/books/about/P ... RTAAAAMAAJ

I must tell you that you are on a very good forum for piping designers & I am sure you will learn a lot on this website.

Keep it up.
